Child Sponsorship FAQs
Can I pay through LightAfrica.org?
Yes! We STRONGLY encourage sponsors setup automatic reoccurring payments through LightAfrica.org. To do so, please click here.
Who do I contact if I need help?
You can contact our Sponsor Support Team in the United States for assistance in resolving any sponsorship or donation issues. Please call (916) 259-3660 to leave a message for the Sponsor Support Team. A team member will return your call as soon as possible. Alternatively, you may contact them by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Can I donate or sponsor a child through the Light Africa website (www.lightafrica.org)?
Yes! We STRONGLY encourage sponsors and donors to set up automatic payments by Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) or by credit card (with a small additional fee) through the Light Africa Online Community. To do so, please click here or click “Donate Now” on the Light Africa home page.
What methods of payment do you accept for donations and sponsorships?
Donors/sponsors can pay by check, Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT), or by credit card. We do not accept cash donations because of the lack of accountability in non-traceable payments. We greatly prefer sponsors to set up automatic recurring payments by EFT or by credit card through the Light Africa Online Community. However, if a sponsor wishes to pay by check, they should ensure the check arrives by the 1st of each month so that the funds are included in funds transferred to the students in Uganda. Do not mail your check to Uganda. Instead, please mail your check to:
PO Box 1092
Carlsbad, CA 92018
What does it cost to sponsor a child?
There are three basic levels of sponsorship for the children of Light Africa, depending on whether they are a primary school, secondary school, or college/university student.
- For a primary school student, the sponsorship amount is $36 per month.
- For a secondary school student, the sponsorship amount is $51 per month.
- For a college/university student, the sponsorship amount is $101 per month.
If a sponsor/donor chooses to pay by credit card, Light Africa is required to pay a fee to use their services. If you choose this option, to ensure that the child receives the full sponsorship amount, the fees are as follows.
- For a primary school student, the total fee is $38 per month.
- For a secondary school student, the total fee is $53 per month.
- For a college/university student, the total fee is $105 per month.
Can I choose the day of the month to make my payment?
When you sponsor a child through the Light Africa Online Community, you can choose between the following four dates each month for your recurring Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) or credit card sponsorship payment to be processed: the 5th, 10th, 20th, or 25th of the month. Payments by check can be any day of the month, but should arrive by the 1st of each month.
Can I pay in advance in larger payments instead of paying monthly?
Yes. You may pay in advance as far as you would like, but please be sure to indicate the months that are covered in the payment.
How do I write to my child?
You can write your child either via email in the Light Africa Online Community, or by standard mail. To send an email to your child, connect the Light Africa Online Community and log in to your account. After you log in, you will see the “My Children” option in the left panel under “My Account.” Click on the “My Children” link to see the child or children you are sponsoring. To the right of the child’s picture and name, you will see a link that says “Write Letter/Special Gift.” Clicking on that link brings you to a page where you can write your letter. When you have finished your letter, click on the “Send Note” link to complete the process of sending an email. Please allow a minimum of two weeks for a response to your email.
If you prefer to mail a letter to your child, please address the letter as follows:
–Sponsored child’s name–
c/o James Teira (Kampala Community Church)
P.O. Box 31147 Clock Tower
We have no specific guidelines in writing to your child, but we recommend topics that will encourage them in their walk with Christ. You can share favorite verses, stories of God’s work in your life, and general details about your life. Keep in mind that most of these children come from very impoverished homes, so we recommend against writing about material things, such as the size of your home, televisions, video games, etc.
Can I send my child gifts?
Yes and no. We highly discourage you against purchasing and shipping a gift. There are too many issues with corruption inside the country, and there is no guarantee that the gift will make it to your child. It is also very expensive for shipping, and the item could be purchased at a much cheaper rate within Uganda. If you wish to send money for a gift, please log in to your account in the Light Africa Online Community, select the “My Children” link in the left panel, then click on the “Write Letter/Special Gift” link next to your child. This will take you to a page where you can send a gift to your child and tell us how the gift is to be used. Alternatively, if you wish to send a gift by check, please clearly write “Gift” in the memo field on the check. Please do not send the check directly to Uganda. Instead, send the check to the following address and the money will be sent by wire to Uganda:
PO Box 1092
Carlsbad, CA 92018
The team in Uganda would be happy to purchase something for your child there. They are intimately familiar with the child’s home situation and their greatest needs. They will take the child shopping to make sure that your gift meets the greatest needs of the child. The greatest gift you can give, however, is your relationship and encouragement! We encourage you to send letters, drawings, and pictures.
Will I be notified when my child moves in sponsorship level?
Yes, we will notify you when a child is promoted to a new grade that changes their sponsorship level. If a child passes their exams in December, they will move on to the next grade in January. Therefore, most moves to a new sponsorship level will occur in January.
How long am I expected to continue the sponsorship?
As long as you can or until the child leaves the program. If you are unable to continue your sponsorship, please notify the Sponsor Support Team so that we can find another sponsor for the child.
What percentage of my sponsorship actually gets to the child?
The program is run by volunteers in America, and only $1 of the total monthly sponsorship amount goes to administrative expenses in Kampala.
Is my sponsorship tax deductible?
Yes. Light Africa is a tax exempt religious organization incorporated in the state of California within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The IRS has determined that we are an approved public charity. A copy of our 501(c)(3) approval document is available on request. Please contact our Sponsor Support Team by email at email@example.com or call (916) 259-3660 to request a copy.
